Broad Band Light (BBL) Photofacial. A powerhouse for sun damage, acne, rosacea, and facial rejuvenation.

Updated: Sep 26

What if there was a treatment that could literally slow the ageing process by re-training the mitochondrial DNA to produce better skin cells over time? Good news! It exists and its here in Christchurch in the hands of an experienced dermatology nurse with dermatologist oversight and input.

BBL has been found in high end dermatological clinics across the world for powerful and predictable skin treatments that target the majority of skin types and conditions, banishing sun spots, pigmentation, redness, rosacea, acne, acne scarring and more! All while giving glowing, healthy, rejuvenated skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Given its history of success, providing treatments here at Encore skin has been a no brainer, and with 10 years of successful BBL treatments under our belt we are experts in its use and outcomes.

So... What is BBL?

IPL or Intense Pulsed Light technology has been around for decades, and there are many devices available providing varying levels of treatment and outcomes. It is a form of pulsed light that pushes heat into the skin targeting chromophores in the skin to reduce skin issues such as pigment and redness. however many IPL machines have very little tunability and cannot be tweaked to target specific layers in the skin, meaning more heat needs to be pushed in to get results, this increases the risk for burns and other non desirable outcomes such as skin discolouration. BBL is able to be fine tuned to target very specific layers in the skin, allowing us to provide safer and more personalised treatments for your skin type and risk factors. Not only this but its patented pure sapphire cooling tip keeps the skin cooler allowing for safer, more comfortable treatments and faster recovery times.

Encore Skin's Sciton® BBL machine has been described by world experts as the “Rolls Royce of IPL machines” for skin rejuvenation.

It is also the only Pulsed Light device on the market that has been proven to reverse the ageing genes in the skin (mitochondrial DNA)! A Stanford University study has confirmed this.

Because of this, the skin of many treated patients actually maintains or improves its appearance despite the passage of time.

Our BBL treatments, using the top quality Sciton® BBL machine, effectively provide a more refreshed, rejuvenated and youthful appearance, expertly delivered by professionals.

What will happen during the IPL Forever Young BBLTM procedure?

Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type of procedure performed.

What should I expect after the treatment?

You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented lesions, you will see a darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Your treated skin will feel smoother, fine lines and pores will be less noticeable, and sunspots or uneven pigmentation will fade. Results depend on your condition, the number of treatments, and the area treated. We will provide you with information about the post treatment care and results.

What aftercare do I need?

It is important to follow the Encore Skin instructions. You may be given some skin care products and instructions on how to use them. You will be sensitive to ultra-violet light and you must avoid direct sun exposure until completely healed. Fully cover your skin or use a good sunscreen whenever you go outdoors.

What conditions can be targeted by BBL?

The treatment reduces the long-term signs of skin ageing and achieves skin rejuvenation in a natural-looking way, including:

  • broken vessels

  • age spots

  • freckles

  • redness

  • fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Acne

  • Scarring

  • Uneven texture and tone

  • Mild facial sagging

The targeted process restores your skin to its natural beauty, blending its natural colours and making it smoother, vibrant and younger looking.

Redness & Blotchiness

Redness, blotchiness, blushing or flushing of the face can be caused by a variety of underlying diseases, disorders and conditions. Some causes of facial redness can be more permanent such as those caused by rosacea, acne and eczema, and allergic and inflammatory conditions. Commonly, particularly in New Zealand, chronic exposure to sun and wind will cause the development of fine blood vessels on the face.

BBL will treat both superficial and deeper blood vessels. As long as these small vessels are visible, the BBL should be able to treat them and consequently improve your redness.

Studies have shown that approximately 80-90% of patients have significant or complete clearance of their facial redness with Sciton® BBL treatment.

What makes the Sciton® BBL the “Rolls Royce of IPL’s”?

Our Sciton® BBL machine is a top end medical-grade Pulsed Light machine. It is only available in medical rooms, and our specialist dermatology practice has been successfully providing BBL for 10 years, making us the most experienced practitioners in Christchurch that provide this service.

It uses Broadband Light (BBLTM) and has many advanced features that maximise its success whilst minimising side effects. Allowing the treatments to be done with minimal downtime, and maximum results.

How does BBL work?

The light energy delivered by the BBL is absorbed by the targeted areas, for example blood vessels or freckles. This light energy eliminates fine vessels that cause redness and reduces unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions. In addition, this treatment stimulates your skin cells to generate new collagen. It truly does result in skin rejuvenation.

The number of treatments needed will vary from patient to patient. Your treatment is tailored to match your skin type and desired results. Generally three to five treatments will be required three to four week intervals. Once this initial ‘corrective course’ is completed, a single treatment every 6 to 12 months to target any new skin damage should result in maintenance or continued improvement in your skin – keeping it glowing, even, and rejuvenated.

The procedure is gentle, non-invasive and safe. A cool gel is first applied to the treatment area, then a chilled applicator is placed on the skin to deliver the light therapy. The treatment is not generally painful, but in more sensitive areas you may experience some discomfort. Sometimes we will use topical anaesthetic in these areas.

There is virtually no downtime after treatment and in most cases you can apply make-up immediately. However, you may be sensitive to sunlight after treatment and should apply sunscreen and other skin care products as directed by your doctor. Some redness and slight swelling of the treated areas can sometimes occur for a few days after treatment. It is important to follow your providers instructions after your BBLTM treatment to ensure the best possible outcome for your skin.
